Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur

Street food, rainforest and easy onward hops.

Kuala Lumpur is served by Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), which has two terminals: Terminal 1 for most full-service airlines and Terminal 2 for low-cost carriers, including a large AirAsia operation. A free shuttle links the terminals, but allow time if you are changing between them.

The fastest transfer is the KLIA Ekspres train to KL Sentral, which takes around half an hour from either terminal. Airport coaches and ride-hailing apps are cheaper alternatives, though road journeys are longer and depend on traffic. KL Sentral is the city's main interchange for onward trains.

The climate is tropical and warm all year, with high humidity and short afternoon downpours. Rainfall peaks around March to April and October to November, while the drier stretches are usually June to August and January to February. An umbrella and a light layer for strong air-conditioning are both useful.

Around town, the LRT, MRT, monorail and KTM Komuter lines cover most visitor areas, and a Touch 'n Go card works across them. Free GoKL city buses loop through the centre. Walking is possible but pavements are uneven and covered walkways matter in the rain and heat.

Things to do include the Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC park, Menara KL, the limestone caves and temple at Batu Caves just north of the city, Merdeka Square and the colonial-era core, the shops and street food of Bukit Bintang and Jalan Alor, Chinatown around Petaling Street, and the Islamic Arts Museum. Day trips to Putrajaya or the Genting highlands are easy by train or bus.

Practical notes: the currency is the Malaysian ringgit (MYR); cards are common in malls while cash and e-wallets suit hawker stalls. Dress modestly for mosques and temples, where head coverings or robes may be provided. Check your own visa requirements with an official source before booking.
