Dubai
Desert skyline, souks and year-round sun.
Dubai is served mainly by Dubai International Airport (DXB), one of the busiest airports in the world and the home base of Emirates. A second, smaller airport, Al Maktoum International (DWC), handles some charter and low-cost traffic, so check which airport your itinerary uses before booking ground transport.
Getting from the airport into the city is straightforward. The Dubai Metro Red Line has stations at DXB Terminals 1 and 3 and runs along Sheikh Zayed Road through the main hotel districts. Metered taxis, ride-hailing apps and hotel shuttles are also available around the clock. For public transport you need a rechargeable Nol card, sold at every station.
The most comfortable travel season is roughly November to March, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and outdoor dining, beaches and desert trips are at their best. Summer, from June to September, is very hot and humid, and life moves into air-conditioned malls and indoor attractions. During Ramadan, opening hours and dining customs change, so check timings for the places you plan to visit.
Once in the city, the Metro Red and Green lines, buses, trams and abras (traditional wooden boats crossing Dubai Creek) cover most visitor areas. Distances are long and pavements are not always continuous, so plan taxi rides for door-to-door trips, especially in the heat.
Popular things to do include the observation decks of Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and the fountain shows, the gold and spice souks in Deira, the restored Al Fahidi historic district, the Jumeirah beaches and marina, and desert excursions in the surrounding emirate. Many attractions accept timed online tickets, which helps on weekends.
Practical notes: the currency is the UAE dirham (AED); cards are accepted almost everywhere. Dress modestly in mosques, government buildings and older neighbourhoods. Alcohol is served in licensed hotels and restaurants. Entry rules differ by nationality, so confirm your visa requirements with an official source before you travel.
